My grandmother and I at my high school graduation this past May. She has now been in remission for 8 years.
It all started on May 15, 2004, when I found out that my worst nightmare had become a reality. The phone call that I got on that day at two o’clock in the afternoon changed my life forever. I was told that my grandmother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Now for those of you have been in this same situation, you know how it feels. Your entire world seems to stop and all you can think about is that one thing- CANCER. Hi! I’m my name is Maegan Bennett. I am the young college student whose nightmares became true. I am very close to my grandmother, so finding out she had cancer was really hard for me. I spent many night crying and wondering why this had to happen. I blamed everyone around me for my grandmother getting sick, even though there was nothing they could do to control it. After being with my grandmother through her battle and seeing how cancer not only effects the patient but also their family, I decided to figure out a way to help other people going through the same situation. I realized how hard it was for me to get through it, and I didn’t want anyone else to have to do what I did. Knowing that I didn’t have the cure for cancer, I decided to find another way to help my fellow warriors battling breast cancer. I decided to write a blog. I wanted to provide an encouraging community of supportive and experienced women that could help others get through their battles that come along with breast cancer. This community consists of women battling the disease, survivors, and the people that have experienced this life-altering sickness alongside their loved ones. Together we strive to provide encouragement, advice, and strength for those battling cancer. My blog is centered around the Susan G. Komen foundation. Created in 1982, Susan G. Komen began its mission to end breast cancer forever. Throughout my grandmother’s battle against breast cancer, Susan G. Komen was a big part of my life. They were extremely helpful to me and my family. They provided us with information about breast cancer, and where there to answer any questions that we had. From experience, I know how challenging it can be to grasp and understand what it means for cancer to become a part of your life, but I also know that having a supportive community behind you, like Susan G. Komen, helps to make your journey a whole lot easier. It’s important to find a community that shares the same values as you and are reaching for the same goal as you, and what better place to find that than right here on my blog. I am from a small town in Georgia, so I value communication and friendship. By communicating with the people around you, you are able to build a close community with a strong support system. I believe that unity is a key component to getting through the battle of breast cancer. Without everyone working together there will never be any improvements towards finding a cure. Become a part of our community today by sharing your personal story with us on “Our Fight” page. This is a place that people are able to come and share their own personal story with breast cancer in hope to help someone else. Your battle against breast cancer may be what helps someone get through a tough time. I encourage you to share your story as we all join together in support of one another with the goal of ending breast cancer forever.
